Rules of reviewing publications
The articles submitted to the magazine are subject to a preliminary editorial review. After the initial assessment, the articles can be submitted for review, rejected or sent back to the author with suggestions for necessary corrections or additions.
PTJ uses a peer-double-blind review procedure, meaning that the reviewers do not know the author of the submitted article and the author does not know who reviewed the text.
Reviewers and authors remain anonymous throughout the review process, even if an article by an editor of PTJ has been reviewed.
The purpose of peer review is to help editors make further decisions publishing and to help authors improve the content of their articles and journalistic abilities.
Selection and tasks of reviewers
The reviewers:
-
are specialists chosen by the editorial board in the given field covered by the submitted article;
-
have at least a doctoral degree and a suitable academic output;
-
have an unblemished academic record;
-
are bound to confidentiality in their opinions on the reviewed article;
-
are obliged not to make use of the knowledge gained during the review process before publication of the article;
-
do not receive payment for writing the review.
If the author of the reviewed text is associated with the editors, he cannot participate in the selection of reviewers and deciding whether to accept the text for publication.
The review should be prepared in a timely manner and without consultation or sharing information with third parties. Reviewers who believe that they do not have the appropriate qualifications to do the review or know that they will not be able to undertake it within the specified time limit, should inform the editorial board. Reviewers are also required to notify the editors in the event of a conflict of interest (e.g. resulting from links with authors, companies or institutions involved in the preparation of the article).
Review process
The review procedure is in accordance with the guidelines of the Ethics in Science Unit, presented in the Ministry of Science and Education pamphlet Good Practices in Academic Review Procedures.
PTJ is based on the digital Open System Journal, which allows the review process to be carried out in a confidential, independent and automatic manner.
The review is made in writing. Before submitting the text for review, the editorial board presents the subject of the article to the reviewer. If a reviewer undertakes to make a review, he receives an assigned article without the author's personal data and a review form, which he/she has to complete in accordance with the instructions contained therein and send back by the Open System Journal within 7 days from the date of transmission.
A reviewer is entitled to suggest that an article should be published in another issue of the journal, in which case the editors make the final decision on where it is to be published.
When assessing an article, reviewers should consider the usefulness of the text, an innovative approach to the subject, the methodology used or the presence of references to the latest research. The editors do not put pressure on the reviewer and do not try to influence his assessment of the article.
The reviewer's duties include assessing independence in the preparation of the article, paying attention to whether it borrows (without reference) or plagiarizes other work. Any significant similarities between the article and other published papers should be reported in the review form.
The review form
Reviewers must complete a form provided by the editors (one template form covers all submitted texts), on which they give their decision regarding publication. The decisions are the following:
a) The article is accepted for publication without further changes.
b) The article is accepted for publication after the author has made minor changes recommended by the reviewers. After a reviewer has provided such an evaluation, the editors return the article to the author with the form attached; the author then has 7 days to correct the article and resend it to the editors. The editorial board is then responsible for the final decision on publication, judging whether the corrections suggested by the reviewer have been made. The author may appeal the review and present his/her position. Failure to take the reviewers’ recommendations into consideration without presenting one’s position results in rejection of the text by the editors.
c) The article cannot be accepted for publication.
In this case, authors receive a response from the editors with the form containing all the reviewers’ comments attached. If an author decides to correct the article and resubmit it to the editors, a new review procedure will apply.
If the diversity of opinions presented in the reviews makes the decision impossible, editors may appoint an additional reviewer.
After review
After collecting review forms and based on the opinions contained therein, the editors decide to reject or accept the text for publication. The corrected text may be sent again to the same reviewer. The PTJ editors save the reviewers' decisions as well as their publication decisions in the Open System Journal, which allows further work on the online issue, finally published in open access.
After placing the review in the Open System Journal, the authors of the reviewed articles receive an e-mail notification about the end of the review process, its results (without information who made this review) and about the editorial decision.
The editorial board updates the list of reviewers cooperating with the Polish Theatre Journal after the publication of the last issue in a year on this page below.
